Curriculum – Years 7 – 10

Year 7 Curriculum
Year 7 is an important transition year from Primary Education to Secondary Education. Students are exposed to a wider range of subjects than encountered during their primary years, commencing studies in the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, LOTE, Music, Art, Drama, Dance, Physical Education, Health and Religious Education.

Year 8 Curriculum
The Year 8 academic program is designed along very similar lines to that of Year 7, enabling students to consolidate and extend their understanding and skills in each of their core subjects, namely English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, LOTE, Music, Art, Drama, Information and Technology, Physical Education, Health and Religious Education.
Pastoral Care, Camps and Outdoor Learning experiences are also part of the Year 8 program.

Year 9 Curriculum
St John’s College offers both a core compulsory curriculum and a number of elective Semester Units in Year 9. The core studies are comprised of English, Mathematics, and Science, Humanities e.g. History and Geography, LOTE, Physical Education, Health Education and Religious Education. In addition there is also the opportunity to select from a range of semester length elective units i.e. Visual Art, Information Technology, Civic and Citizenship and Food Technology. These elective units allow students to identify their academic strengths and interests and learn more about themselves as learners and individuals.

Year 10 Curriculum
Students in Year 10 will continue an exciting and important phase of secondary education – the preparation for VCE. Their experiences and achievements in Years 9 and 10 will assist them in making sound decisions about what they will study in the vital VCE years and beyond. While there continues to be a set of core studies, including. English, Mathematics, Science (which is composed of trimesters of Biology, Chemistry and Physics), History/Geography, LOTE, Physical Education, Health Education, and Religious Education, there is also the opportunity to select from a range of semester length elective units i.e. Visual Art, Information Technology, Civic and Citizenship and Food Technology. These elective units provide either an introduction or a continuation from Year 9 studies, to areas of study that lead to VCE Units. They allow students to explore strengths, interests and preferences before committing to a VCE study.
